Two of my favorite things are lighthouses and whales. I volunteer for a lightstation in Big Sur and love the wildness and wonder of the areas most lighthouses or lightstation are at. So do you know the difference between a lighthouse and a light station? I it is only the building with the light, then it is a lighthouse. If there if a lighthouse and other building where the keepers and their families lived, then it is a light station. Now you know.
Cape Disappointment and North Head are both in Washington at Cape Disappointment State Park. Cape Disappointment light was built in 1856 to warm of the treacherous river bar known by then as the graveyard of the Pacific. It is the oldest functioning lighthouse on the West Coast . There are also the remains of Fort Canby built in 1862 to protect the river from enemies. More at parks.state.wa.us if you are interested.
Northhead Lighthouse was constructed in 1897 because mariners said that Cape Disappointment lighthouse could not be seen when ships approached from the north. NorthHeadLighthouse, com.
Park also has an interpretive center but it was closed when i was at the park but looks like it would be interesting.
