Took these pictures at the Tillamook Lighthouse in Oregon. Tillamook Rock Lighthouse was built in 1886 and was called Tilly the Terrible. Built close to the Columbia River and on a rock in the Pacific Ocean, this lighthouse was one of the most dangerous and tough to live and work at Lights. After 88 years, it was sold many times to private owners. One was a to owners who established a columbarium, a place to intern ashes. Because the light was always getting overrun by rough waves, someone asked the owner what would happen to the ashes. This was his response, lol. “People ask me what if a tsunami hits the lighthouse, and I tell every person their second choice better be to be buried at sea.” Only about 30 people did and two of those urns were stolen.A head keeper and four assistants were typically assigned to the rock, and the men’s families, if they had them, lived ashore. The keepers spent three months on and two weeks off, with four keepers always on the rock. After conditions proved extremely harsh on both the physical and mental stability of the keepers, the rotation was changed to forty-two days on and twenty-one days off.
