After a questionable start because of the possibility of rain, we were on to count the monarchs at the Pacific Grove Monarch Sanctuary. They are on the back side of the sanctuary actually right now and so counting them is interesting to say the least since they are in folks back yard. We got permission to go in the back yard but many had moved and we could only get a small portion of them from that view. Back out in the street we went. The sheer number and beauty of them was astounding.
The first picture is just one section of the cypress they are in.
This is a closeup of on of the dead branches covered in lace lichen and monarchs. Love this.
a distance shot that can be zoomed in to see individual clusters but i was trying to give the viewer an image of most of the butterflies
Final count was 17,100. With rain coming in this afternoon and possibly Sunday, we will see if the monarchs move back into the sanctuary.
UPDATE: I went back a couple of hours later to take some brochures and several hundred of them were already moving. However, it was to a tree that i had never seen them on before. I have docent duty on monday and it will be interesting to see where they are then. Check back for updates.
