Warning--these are actual photos of the birth of an elephant seal....
So this Mom was having a hard time as the membranes surrounding the pup had already burst. I have heard this described as a dry birth and elephant seal pups have lots of fur. But i had not seen them putting their flippers up in the air like this before. But since the Mother i saw give birth the day before had also done it, maybe what i had seen was not the norm but this is. But then again, the Mom that gave birth the night before had a breech (fins first) and a dry birth and had quiet a time getting that baby out. But more in another post about that one.
With each photo, you can see progress being made. Of the 10 births of elephant seals pups that i have witnessed, it usually only takes a couple of minutes once I can see a part of the pup starting to show between the Mom's flippers. This one was no different, even with all the flippers in the air.
This one did seem to be mouth point up, where it seems like most others i have seen have been mouth on the bottom
All done except for the placenta. Now is time for the bonding and voice recognition process to begin. Well done Momma!!!
