I have often thought that when the monarchs fly and the sun is shining through their color scales, that they look like flying stained glass ornaments. This time of year as we approach the mating season (and i guess you could say we are there as I saw my first mated pair on the 9th), the monarchs flying around the sanctuary is wonderful. Even lighting in the trees with wings wide open as they sun in all their orange and black is spine tingling beauty. And then as they flutter around the clusters or others sunning and disrupt them and all the wings are opening and closing. Just truly amazing.
This pictures especially gives one the feeling of watching something so ethereal. We should have at least another month of this unless it stays really warm and they fly away sooner than usual. All the rains we are getting make me hopeful that the milkweed will be up and plentiful when they need it to lay their eggs.
