This is the third time i have seen the female otter i am calling Royal. Each time she has been on the right side of the Coast Guard Jetty where i usually do not see otters. Most times they are on the left side or in the harbor proper. But not in this little strip of harbor where the Coast Guard, NOA and Monterey Fire boats are tide up to the docks. As you can see in this first picture, the post is steel and she beats the shells up against it to break them.
If you look closely, you can just barely see the purple tag on her right flipper. There is a white tag on the left flipper. Here she is working on cleaning out all the meat from the muscle shell.
It hard work but she seems to enjoy them. It is just interesting to me that this is the only place i have seen her and it has been in a place where i almost never find other otters. However, because she is banging away on the steel supports, i can always hear her before i see her.
