went to lake el estero to walk with Ms Liberty. Had to go back and get my camera because lots of birds out there i do not normally see on this lake. The top two pictures are of a pied-billed grebe. They like ponds like this although I have seen several around the Coast Guard jetty.
This duck is one that I am not so sure what it is. He has markings like a mallard but it was much bigger than the mallards that were swimming close by and the white around the neck was different as well as other things that looked off. My guess is a hybrid with a mallard but not sure what else.
And then this Black crowned night heron flew in the reeds. This is actually where all the reference books talk about them being found. However, it is the first one that I have seen in what would be considered it's natural habitat. I usually see them wading or sitting in the rocks along the shore of the ocean. And up to six pairs were nesting along the rock formations near bird island at Point Lobos last year.
These mallards were swimming in this formation. Love watching them on the lake. They are almost always there.
