Arrived at the Harbor Seal Rookery this morning to find a couple of new faces on the beach. This is Pup 6. He/She might get a name at a later date but for now, this is it. He is a premie. As you probably noticed, he is very fuzzy. Harbor seals will usually lose this extra fur before birth, much like babies do with lanugo. Being a premie harbor seal does not doom the pup but it does make for an uncertain future. Being early has problems because the pup is smaller and that much more likely to get battered by waves, other seals, etc. Plus, the Mom may not have milk since the birth is early and that is a major problem for a pup that needs to nurse often to get the fat in Mom's milk (54%) to fatten up and make some blubber to help with our cold Pacific Ocean. So we will see how he progresses over the next couple of days.
this pup was actually calling out to Mom but it looks like it is laughing at something. Too cute by far.
